In the lead-up to the announcement of the 2020 Cundill History Prize winner, experts from McGill’s Faculty of Arts will explore the importance of history and historical research as a key to better understanding our world.

At a time when our thoughts turn to social justice in unprecedented ways, each professor will highlight one of the three Cundill finalists’ books while engaging in a broader conversation about difficult histories, oppression, and how we can revise misconceptions about the past. Ultimately, the panelists will consider how historical precedent can help modern-day society confront current challenges and imagine better futures.

Wendell Nii Laryea Adjetey, Assistant Professor, Department of History and Classical Studies; specialist in the African American experience in post-Reconstruction United States, and African Diaspora in Canada and the Caribbean Basin.

Sandeep Banerjee, Associate Professor, Department of English; specialist in post-colonial literature with an emphasis on the British Empire.

Lisa Overholtzer, Assistant Professor and William Dawson Scholar, Department of Anthropology, whose research examines the everyday lives of ordinary people living in ancient and colonial central Mexico.
